The dengue virus causes dengue fever. There are four different serotypes of the dengue virus, DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3, and DEN-4. These are transmitted through the bite of infected female Aedes mosquitoes Aedes aegypti. These mosquitoes are day-biting and primarily active during daylight hours, especially in the early mornings and late afternoons. Unlike other mosquito species that primarily feed on animals, Aedes aegypti mosquitoes prefer human blood. Dengue fever can be mild or severe. Mild dengue fever is characterised by high fever, severe headache, joint and muscle pain, rash, and mild bleeding. In contrast, severe dengue fever is characterised by severe abdominal pain, liver damage, reduction in platelet count, and bleeding, which can be dangerous.
