What Is Catfish?
In the Southern United States, catfish species may be known by a variety of slang names, such as "mud cat", "polliwogs", or "chuckleheads".[15] These nicknames are not standardized, so one area may call a bullhead catfish by the nickname "chucklehead", while in another state or region, that nickname refers to the blue catfish
Most catfish are bottom feeders. Catfish do not have scales; their bodies are often naked. In some species, their mucus-covered skin is used in cutaneous respiration, where the fish breathes through its skin.
What are the dangers of eating Catfish?
1. Mercury Poisoning
Most catfish caught in polluted waters will have absorbed an unsafe level of Mercury, When this mercury accumulates in the fish as methylmercury it becomes toxic to humans when consumed in large quantities. Overconsumption of fish high in methylmercury can cause serious health problems, including damage to the digestive system, kidneys and lungs.
2. Stroke and heart attack
Consuming an excessive amount of catfish, which is rich in Omega 6 has been linked to an increased risk of hypertension and subsequent heart attack or stroke. Omega 6 is pro-inflammatory. Meaning that it causes inflammatory disease. Generally, fish contains oil but catfish is overloaded with bad fat and high cholesterol not to mention the fact that most cultivated catfish are filled with steroids, hormonal feeds & fattening chemicals(carcinogens). When cholesterol is high, the flow of blood is truncated and clotting can occur. Clotting leads to cardiac arrest, heart attacks, thrombosis.
3. Obesity and paralysis
Catfish contains a lot of bad fat that causes not only obesity but also settles in the bloodstream. This is very dangerous because when blood fails to get to certain body organs, paralysis of that organ is inevitable.
4. Inflammatory bowel disease
Excess consumption of omega6 fatty acids may put you at an increased risk of having inflammatory bowel disease.
5. May contain parasites
Another issue with eating catfish is the risk of parasitic infections. Some species of catfish, particularly those found in warm waters, can be infected with parasites that can cause serious health problems such as liver damage and even death. While cooking fish thoroughly can help kill off some types of parasites, it’s not foolproof. And for people who eat raw or undercooked catfish dishes like ceviche or sushi rolls containing catfish, the risk is even higher.
6. Brain disease
Catfish contains a toxin called BMAA (β-N-methylamino-L-alanine), which can cause brain diseases. The BMAA causes destruction of motor neurons in the brain, leading to neurodegenerative diseases likes Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's, and ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease)
